The new Hindi film Thamma opened to mixed reviews, but the Bollywood movie has made a space for itself amid the top grossing films of the weekend at the global box office. Comscore ranked Thamma as the seventh highest grossing film of the week ending October 26 with a global collection of $14.6 million. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar (Munjya), Thamma features Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles and Nawazuddin Siddiqui also plays an important part in the horror comedy produced by Maddock Films. Meanwhile, the Kannada film Kantara Chapter 1 has become the number one top grossing Indian film of the year 2025 as it inches close to $100 million.

Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 continues to write history at the global box office even as it preps for a digital debut. The Kannada film toppled Vicky Kaushal’s Bollywood war saga Chhaava from the top of the IMDb list of top grossing Indian films of the year 2025. Just two days short of completing a month at the ticket windows, Kantara Chapter 1 has collected $93.8 million worldwide.

The top five Indian films with highest grossing score in India in the year 2025 are now on IMDb: Kantara Chapter 1 followed by Chhaava. The Bollywood romantic story Saiyaara is the third on the list followed by Rajnikanth’s Tamil film Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-NTR-starrer Bollywood spy film War 2.

Kantara Chapter 1 has fared best in India and overseas collection has been on the lower side. Roughly $75 million of the total came from Indian markets while the remaining was collected from rest of the world.

Interestingly, the Hindi dubbed version of the film has been performing way better than other dubbed versions, and even the original Kannada version. Kantara Chapter 1 has collected nearly $21 million in India from the original Kannada version while the Hindi-dubbed version has contributed nearly $24 million in the past 28 days. Telugu and Tamil dubbed versions have collected $10.4 and $7 million respectively.

Directed Sarpotdar creates the latest film in Maddock Films’ horror-comedy universe with Thamma which features Ayushmann Khurrana and Nawazuddin Siddiqui along with Rashmika Mandanna in a pivotal role. The film released on 21 October, on the occassion of Diwali holidays in India and made a good opening of nearly $3 million in India markets alone. However, the film’s collections have been sliding down ever since. As it completed seven days at the ticket windows, Thamma has earned nearly $14 million. Globally, it closed the first week at $16 million.

Thamma tries its best to combine the genius of Stree and Munjya, but fails to qualify for a similar league. While the previous horror comedies from Maddock Films were refreshing, funny, sarcastic and entertaining - all at the same time. A few flaws aside, the earlier films were milestones in Hindi films while the new one falls way behind. In portraying supernatural elements, Thamma lacks the obviousness and effortlessness that Stree and Munjya flaunted.

Milap Zaveri’s new Hindi movie does not have big numbers but has been scoring well for itself, given that it is a low-budget film. Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat has earned $5 million in India and $7 million worldwide in a week at the box office since it hit theatres on October 21, clashing with Thamma.

Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa play lead roles in the film that Zaveri co-wrote with Mushtaq Sheikh. Sachin Khedekar and Ananth Narayan Mahadevan also play important roles in the film.
